A rope is cut by a cutting machine with a parting wheel or any other suitable method which does not disturb the wires. Care must be taken in the case of percussive or shearing methods to ensure that the seizing or the rope lay is not disturbed. Oxyacetylene cutting should not be employed as it is likely to damage the wire and lubricant. Non-preformed ropes should never be cut without proper long seizing.
Seizing is the wrapping of wire laidaround a rope to prevent its wires from kinking or moving to slacken themselves when the rope is cut between two adjacent seizings. Before cutting a wire rope, seizing should be placed on both sides of the place where the rope is to be cut. The length of seizing and the wire diameter shall be in proportion to the rope diameter.
